Intel

Key Characteristics

Generally speaking Intel has fewer, but more powerful cores. This means that Intel CPU's have higher Instructions per Clock (IPC's) than its AMD counterpart. Intel CPU's are typically priced higher because of the higher IPC's, reliability, and overall brand recognition.

Land Grid Array (LGA) - This is the largest indication that a modern CPU is in fact an Intel CPU. The underside of the CPU will not have pin that protrude, but rather a grid shaped pattern of contact points. These contact points are met by the motherboard are is how the CPU "talks" to the motherboard. Intel and only a small amount of AMD CPU's use this type of interface when producing their CPU's. This type of production ensures that the CPU's fault tolerance remains low, as well as the cost of production.

Another way an Intel CPU can be indentifed is by the front side of the CPU, where the metal plate is. This metal plate will have the CPU information engraved so that it can be easily identifiable if the surface is clean. This metal plate will show some of the following information: Company Name, Year of Production, Model Number, Origin of Production, Clock Speed, Cache, Socket Type, and others.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.

AMD

Key Charactersitics

Opposite from Intel, AMD CPU's typically have more cores, that are less powerful. AMD does not occupy a majority of the market share or brand recognition and overall AMD CPU's are much cheaper than their Intel counterparts.

Pin GridArray (PGA) - Also opposite to Intel, AMD utilizes the PGA when manufacturing their CPU's. This means that the bottom of the CPU has metal pins sticking out of the CPU. These pins make the CPU more susceptible to breaking or malfunctioning when handling, but also decrease overall cost of compatibile motherbaords.
